The appointment of Professor Carolyn Sue AM
NeuRA
Chair
About Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA)
Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) is an independent, not-for-profit medical research institute established 30 years ago. Located at the Prince of Wales Hospital campus in Randwick, Sydney, NeuRA is one of the largest research centers focused on the brain and nervous system in Australia.
With over 700 staff, NeuRA is recognised as a global leader in research on diseases and disorders of the brain and nervous system. Their work is changing approaches to investigation and treatment worldwide.
The need for an inaugural chair
In 2021, NeuRA CEO Professor Peter Schofield AO engaged Brooker Consulting to undertake a global executive search for NeuRA’s first Kinghorn Chair in Neurodegeneration Research. This role was made possible by a multi-million dollar, five-year philanthropic commitment from the Kinghorn Foundation to support research on new Parkinson’s disease and neurological disorder therapies.
The Chair would lead a program developing improved diagnosis, treatment, and care for neurodegenerative conditions. They would also direct a high-calibre research group, mentor students, and promote academic excellence. An exceptional publication record, industry and consumer engagement history, as well as outstanding grant support were key selection criteria.
The executive search process
Brooker Consulting devised a comprehensive global search strategy combining advertising and networks to identify candidates despite COVID-19 restrictions. Their approach generated exceptional interest and a strong shortlist.
The outcome
After an 11-month process involving candidate interviews and negotiations, Professor Carolyn Sue AM was appointed the inaugural Kinghorn Chair. Professor Sue brings over 20 clinical and research staff with her as she takes on this leadership role guiding NeuRA’s team culture and research outcomes.
"I am thrilled to welcome Professor Sue into our research community. She brings a wealth of both clinical and research expertise and an acute focus on outcomes for the consumer. I anticipate a real acceleration of research results and commercial development of new therapeutics and I cannot thank the Kinghorn Foundation enough for creating such an opportunity."
