In today’s complex and evolving landscape, the value of serving on a Not-For-Profit (NFP) Board of Directors extends far beyond mere governance. Our last article, titled 8 Transformative Benefits of Serving on a Nonprofit Board, was from our professional standpoint. In this article, we offer you the unique perspective of our outstanding contacts.

For this article, I engaged in conversation with not-for-profit board directors. It was great to interact with individuals at various points in their governance journey – whether for the very first time or as veteran Directors. There are certainly some key themes that stand out, even though each perspective is unique and articulated differently. Some professionals talk about motivations for joining a NFP board of directors, others talk about the opportunity to engage in meaningful work with social impact, but overall it is clear that serving on a not-for-profit board of directors enables personal and professional development.

At Brooker Consulting, we recognise the multifaceted value of serving on a NFP board. These postives extend to both individuals and the organisations they serve.

Benefits and Testimonials

1. Professional development

Serving on an NFP board provides significant opportunities for professional growth. It allows individuals to develop and refine skills, gain governance experience, and enhance their capabilities, particularly in leadership and decision-making roles.

What I didn’t expect was that serving on the board of not-for-profit organisations would be the very best thing I could do for my professional development. Learning to ask the right questions, make big decisions, and fulfil my responsibilities as a director has made me a far better leader and opened up several new opportunities.
Stephen Ellis, Managing Director and Non Executive Director

“The people sitting around the table share values and commitment around a cause. Not-for-Profits offer a rich environment for skills development and self-fulfilment in a very holistic way.
Dr Jacqueline Jennings, CEO | Chair | Non-Executive Director

2. Expanding perspective

Board members benefit from exposure to diverse perspectives, ideas, and practices, which broadens their understanding of different sectors and deepens their conversational skills.

“Having the opportunity to think as a Director also enriched the effectiveness of communication as an executive to the boards I have worked with. There is a lot of reciprocity in board service.”
Kate Kennedy AM , CEO and Director

” I’ve been blessed to share the board table with an incredibly diverse mix of corporate leaders with rich work histories. Every meeting is a learning experience – a business master class if you will. Exposure to diverse viewpoints, styles, and laser-focused questions, has helped me hone my own ability to critically question, think, and probe.”
Everard Hunder, Chief Marketing Officer and Non Executive Director

3. Networking and collaboration

Serving on an NFP board is a valuable networking opportunity, allowing board members to connect with professionals from various sectors and to build strong, collaborative relationships.

“I have learned from others with a range of different skill sets and perspectives, and developed a deeper understanding of community.”
Helen Quiney, Executive Director and  Board Director

“It’s shown me the importance of leadership and effective decision making alongside people with diverse skills, experiences and perspectives – people with whom I wouldn’t ordinarily work with or necessarily choose to work with.”
Giselle Pinto, Acting CEO and Board Member

4. Personal fulfilment

Many find personal satisfaction in contributing to societal well-being and supporting causes they are passionate about, which also provides a sense of purpose and belonging.

“It is very rewarding to be part of something where the sum is greater than the individual parts.”
– Deborah Jenkins, Executive leader and Non-Executive Director

“Volunteering is good for you! It contributes to the greater good of society, gives you satisfaction, creates a sense of belonging, and in my case embraces my passion of developing organisations that benefit the people it serves.”
– Onno Van Es, Public Sector Executive and Non Executive Director

5. Leadership experience

Serving on an NFP board provides an enriching experience in leadership and governance, helping board members to navigate complex challenges and make strategic decisions that align with organisational missions.

“Serving as a Director on not-for-profit boards has provided me with unique and enriching experiences that have significantly shaped my approach to leadership and governance.”
Liam Mayo, CEO and Director

6. Dual understanding

Board members gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the board and the executive team, enhancing their effectiveness in  leadership roles by understanding the perspectives from each side within their primary careers.

“I became a better executive because I had a stronger understanding of governance and the relationship between the CEO, CFO & the Board.”
Deirdre Blythe, Non Executive Director and Executive

“I believe I am a better Board Director because of my CEO experience, and vice versa. This dual insight enhances my effectiveness in both roles.”
Maya Avdibegovic, Chief Executive Officer and Board Member

7. Contributing to society

NFP board members find meaning and motivation in contributing to mission-driven work, supporting organisations that align with their values and making a tangible impact.

“It’s about more than just giving back to communities; it’s personally fulfilling. Guiding organisations towards their vision, offering strategic focus, and ensuring financial oversight is rewarding, but the emotional gratification and witnessing success brings pure joy.”
– Teresa Smith, Non-Executive Director, Senior Strategy and Marketing Professional

“I spent six years on the Finance, Risk & Audit Committee at Cancer Council Victoria alongside my executive career. My motivation was to support the great work CCV does after my father died of cancer. I’d wholeheartedly recommend an NFP board or committee role – so long as its mission is important to you.”
Deirdre Blythe, Non Executive Director and Executive
