The appointment of Sylvia Hadjiantoniou

Anchor

Chair

Sylvia Hadjiantoniou

Anchor is a not-for-profit organisation that has been an integral part of Melbourne’s east through 45 years of rapid growth and change. Anchor works with children, young people, families and individuals to help them re-engage in the community through support with employment, education, relationships, health and community life.

The organisation improves clients’ long-term wellbeing by first providing them with a safe and stable place. Clients are then supported to increase their education and employment outcomes while developing healthy relationships and connections and driving trusted partnerships. This combination will result in sustainable and lasting impacts for our participants, creating new opportunities and sustainable growth underpinned by skilled staff and a positive organisational culture. Anchor’s services include:

Homelessness Support:  This team works with individuals and families within the Yarra Ranges Shire.
Assistance ranges from information and referrals to helping people transition to long-term, sustainable housing. Anchor also provides crisis support through our Opening Doors network.

Out of Home Care:  Services offer support to those caring for children and young people who are unable to live with their biological parents. Anchor carers are given training and access to peer support groups and financial assistance information. Anchor works alongside the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) to coordinate placements as required.

Youth Development: This program integrates housing, education, employment and other services for young people aged 16-25 who are at risk or experiencing homelessness. This approach is based on a Foyer model designed to work with young people to create stable housing, education and employment pathways. Utilising this approach, the youth development team works with young people to help them realise and achieve their aspirations and dreams.

The Chair of the Board indicated his intention to step down from his position as Chair of the Board in November of 2024 and initiated a search and selection process to identify an outstanding successor.

Anchor Community Care has a governance arrangement that supports integration and fosters collaboration, strong leadership and management, creating a unified organisation.  We were asked to identify a seasoned governance professional with a proven track record of leadership in commercial, community-based, or philanthropic organisations. Experience in the housing sector or strong networks in government would be seen as a valuable asset. We looked for a person passionate about making a difference, driven by a commitment to excellence, and ready to lead with purpose.

An extensive search strategy was outlined and the campaign was launched after a detailed briefing with key stakeholders. A targeted advertising and executive search campaign was implemented generating an impressive level of interest and a high-quality shortlist.

After a rigorous interview and presentation process with the selection panel, the CEO and the wider Board, the appointment of Sylvia Hadjiantoniou as Chair was confirmed.

Sylvia is a seasoned governance leader who holds a Bachelor of Commerce, a Diploma in Building and Construction from the Master Builders Association, and an MBA.  She is an AICD graduate with experience as an executive in infrastructure and major projects, precincts, partnerships and major transformational programs.
