Offshore we see the exploding impacts of low trust in governments and political parties on the world stage. Onshore, there are many benefits of STEMM-trained leadership at the boardroom table. At the World Economic Forum’s meeting in Davos, a discussion of the Global Risks Report 2024 highlighted that misinformation and disinformation were primary risks for organisations and nations. The Edelman Trust Barometer 2024, unveiled at Davos, indicates that global governments are perceived as less ethical and competent compared to businesses, and trust in innovation is decreasing due to concerns about effective government regulation.  Consequently, the public and employees are turning to their business leaders to bridge the trust gap.

STEMM-trained professionals generally bring integrity and a way of thinking that can be significantly different from those who originate from other disciplines. Those attracted to STEMM industries are attracted to solving issues for the greater good using critical and analytical thinking skills, teamwork and creativity.  As STEMM professionals move from their subject matter expertise into leadership, their logical and critical thinking skills can be invaluable to the skills mix at the executive level and, ultimately, in boardrooms.

As 70% of the boardroom tables in Australia are filled by lawyers, accountants, and MBAs (Women on Boards workshop in August), there are significant benefits to the logical and analytical thinking that STEMM professionals bring to the table. The risks and context of boardroom decision-making are increasingly complex and require rigour and a systematic evidence-based approach.

Dr Ruby Campbell, PhD referred in her book, “Scientists in Every Boardroom” to The Oxford Review of a range of leadership literature said “The type of degree the CEO holds has an impact on the company’s R&D funding. Those with STEMM qualifications will spend more on R&D.”  Leading to more innovation and R&D investment, which is linked to a country’s prosperity. This is why Australia has a specific R&D Tax Incentive program to encourage organisations to invest in the future.

Secondly, she says “CEOs and board members with a higher educational background and greater expertise and experience tend to contribute to higher levels of organisational performance and lower risk.” STEMM professionals often have higher educational levels in their background.

Lastly, Dr Ruby says, “In a world that seems to glorify the fast-talking, shoot-from-the hip, charismatic leader, organisations would be wise to address the biases and related systemic obstacles preventing the much-needed new kind of leader from rising the to the C-suite and boardroom.” referring to the STEMM leaders of today.
